Does Dry Needling Hurt?

Posted on: July 14th, 2026

One of the most common questions patients ask before trying dry needling is, “Does it hurt?” This is an understandable concern, especially for people who are unfamiliar with the treatment or nervous about needles. Fortunately, many of the fears surrounding dry needling are based on misconceptions rather than actual patient experiences.

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique used to treat muscle pain, stiffness, and movement restrictions by targeting trigger points, which are tight bands of muscle that contribute to discomfort and reduced function. The thin, sterile needles used during treatment are much smaller than those used for injections or blood draws, making the experience very different from what many people expect.

Let’s take a look at some of the things everyone should know about dry needling.

The Needles Don’t Cause Significant Pain

The biggest myth about dry needling is that the needles themselves are painful. In reality, most patients feel little to no discomfort as the needle passes through the skin. Because the needles are extremely thin, the insertion is often described as a slight pinch or even completely unnoticeable.

The sensation that patients are more likely to notice occurs when the needle reaches a trigger point. This may create a brief muscle twitch or a dull ache that lasts only a few seconds. While this feeling can be surprising, it is generally considered a positive sign that the targeted muscle is responding to treatment.

Dry Needling Doesn’t Feel Like Getting a Shot

Many people assume dry needling feels like receiving an injection, but the two procedures are very different. Injection needles are larger because they must deliver medication or draw fluid. Dry needling needles are solid, much thinner, and designed only to stimulate muscle tissue.

Without medication being injected, there is typically much less pressure or discomfort during the procedure. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the treatment actually is once they experience it firsthand.

You Won’t Be Sore for Days

Some mild muscle soreness after dry needling is completely normal, much like the feeling after a challenging workout. This soreness usually lasts between 24 and 48 hours and is a sign that the treated muscles are responding to the therapy.

Staying hydrated, performing any recommended stretches, and remaining gently active can often help minimize post-treatment soreness. Many patients begin noticing improved flexibility and reduced muscle tension shortly after the soreness subsides.

Dry Needling Is Not Just for People with Severe Pain

Dry needling can benefit a wide variety of patients, not just those dealing with chronic pain. Athletes frequently use it to improve muscle recovery and performance, while office workers may benefit from relief of neck, shoulder, or back tension caused by prolonged sitting. It can also be helpful for headaches, joint dysfunction related to muscle tightness, sports injuries, and post-surgical rehabilitation when appropriate.

By addressing muscular dysfunction early, patients may prevent small problems from developing into larger, more persistent conditions.

A Personalized Approach Makes the Difference

Every patient has a different pain tolerance and treatment goal. An experienced provider will explain the procedure beforehand, answer questions, and adjust the treatment based on your comfort level. Communication during the session is encouraged, allowing the provider to modify the approach if needed.

Dry needling is often combined with chiropractic care, rehabilitation exercises, stretching, and other therapies to create a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses both pain relief and long-term function.

For most patients, dry needling is far less intimidating than expected. While brief muscle sensations and mild soreness are possible, significant pain is uncommon. Understanding what the treatment actually involves helps replace fear with confidence, allowing patients to experience a therapy that can reduce pain, restore movement, and support a faster return to everyday activities.
